Taking a moment to find joy in a grilled cheese sandwhich.

Liv calls them cheese girls. "Mom" she said in the car on our way home from the store today "Can we have a cheese girled sandwich?"  "Sure Liv that's a good idea", I said.  To which she then ecstatically replied "Yea! I love cheese girl sandwiches cause I'm a cheese girl!".

Four years ago, when this little one stopped breathing after drinking some milk, I never thought I would see the day that she would eat a grilled cheese sandwich. Although she doesn't drink straight cow's milk yet, she can enjoy a grilled cheese sandwich. I'm so happy she's a cheese girl and that she has and continues to outgrow her milk allergy. I only wish my nephew could see the same results, and I wish both of their peanut allergies would go away.
Now onto Warner and his grilled cheese.  Warner likes to treat his grilled cheese the same way he would treat an Oreo cookie.  Only instead of a delicious chocolate cookie filled with cream in the middle, which is then dipped and soaked in a glass of whole milk, it is a grilled cheese sandwich that is dipped bite by bite into water.  The result being a soggy grilled cheese sandwich and a water glass that looks like pure back wash. Disgusting? Yes. Disgraceful to the deliciously thick pieces of Costco whole wheat bread which has been evenly distributed with a nice slab of butter and grilled to perfection with two slices of mild and soft and equally delicious, warm, melty Havarti cheese in the middle? Absolutely.

The joy I find in Warner and his soggy grilled cheese is that he is in fact eating whole wheat bread with cheese in the middle. A year ago this boy would not touch grilled cheeses, or anything for that matter unless it was either cereal, fruit, chicken nuggets or chocolate milk. Every dinner time meal was a fight to try to get Warner just to taste the food I had cooked. I even tried cooking things that all kids enjoy like pizza, macaroni and cheese, and even cinnamon rolls (real healthy I know). He wouldn't even eat those!. Today, I'm happy to say, that along with his grilled cheese, he enjoys a wide variety of other healthy foods, and this makes me happy.
